The most common wish among dying patients is to see a favorite pet, according to a survey. In the poll by Help the Hospices, the staff was quizzed and found 60 per cent had been asked by patients to help them see a pet or animal before they died.

Coleen Ellis lost her “baby girl” in 2003, and she was devastated. No one understood how she could be so upset over losing “just a dog,” and she could never really say goodbye to her terrier-schnauzer mix, Mico. To help pet parents everywhere, she opened the first standalone pet funeral home in the United States in Indianapolis. In this guidebook, she helps pet parents, veterinarians, death-care professionals and others celebrate the special bonds we share with our animal companions. Drawing upo...

Another birthday passed - Another year remembered.
The start of a lifetime of love!
|
Mico's birthday was Saturday, March 19. I remember when I "picked" that day as her's - some simple math from what the Humane Society told me on her age. Seemed like a good day to make "hers." Now, eight years after her death, this day is still hers, and mine. I celebrate the unconditional love, the lessons of forgiveness and the many other lessons she brought to me in life - and in death.
Rest in Peace, My Beloved

When we lose a beloved precious pet, we want the opportunity to say good-bye. To make sure that they are treated with dignity and respect in death just like they were in life. We want them honored - it's what they deserve.

Mike the Dog - our Pet Angel
|
This is my first Christmas without my Golden Retriever, Mike the Dog. My first snowfall without him making his infamous "Golden Angels." With everyone of these firsts, the death of Mike the Dog reminds me again how much I miss my Big Boy.
By planning ahead, you will make sure your pet is honored the way YOU want.
Mike The Dog - My Treat

As a pet parent, you take care of your pet in life and you have all of the same rights when your pet dies. Make sure you are prepared and know what your options are - those options that are RIGHT for you and your family.

Zeus Hibbs

October 30th is a date that Peggy will always remember,... it's the date that part of her heart left her. It's the date that she lost her precious pet friend - Zeus.
With the death of our beloved pets, we as pet parents want to know HOW to honor them.
My Baby Girls Paw Print
|
I WANTED to know all of my options in memorializing Mico! It's like it was the one last thing that I could do to show her that I loved her,... it was about wearing her paw print around my neck. It was about a bit of her hair in a cremation urn vessel. It was about all of that,... I couldn't do enough.
Honor the story of your pets on National Pet Memorial Day
Today is National Pet Memorial Day - honor those pets who have died and have touched your human soul.
The benefits of memorialization items in the grief journey....
My cremation urn necklace holds a bit of hair from all of my beloved pets - Mico, Mike the Dog, Crisco, Ellie Mae, and Rudy,... the comfort that this piece brings me in knowing that I have them with me at all times is priceless! An honor to my deceased pets - Mico and Mikey - as well as the love of my precious babies at home - LOVE IT!
It's so hard to explain when we lose our pets - the feeling of emptiness,....
It's been over a month now since Mike The Dog died. Sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago - sometimes it feels like yesterday. But, I still feel that pit in my stomach, that aching feeling of missing my Big Boy - the feeling that every pet parent has, yet cannot be explained, as we mourn the deaths of our precious little pets.
Getting another pet following the death of a loved friend is certainly a tribute - not cheating!
The Second Child!
|
When a family's heart is ready to open up and love another pet, a big concern is that they feel like they are "cheating" on the deceased pet. However, it's truly a tribute when a family says - "We loved that precious pet so much that we want to feel that love again." And, much like human families - when they have a second human child, they have a second human child. They don't have the second child to replace the first child. Don't feel that your next pet is a replacement of the deceased pet...
When your pet dies, there are so many options that you "don't know what you don't know." Let yourself be guided!
A priceless reminder of our beautiful Golden Retriever, Mike The Dog!

The thought of our special pets dying is many times not a topic that we want to think about. However, it's so important to know your options, to allow yourself to be educated on the choices of memorialization items and services available. Whether you seek this information out before the death of your pet or as you are completing their final arrangements, there are so many things that you will truly find yourself saying "I didn't know I could do that."
Such an act of love - to honor our Mike the Dog

Always My Happy Boy!
|
It's been a long week with the death of my beautiful Golden Retriever, Mike The Dog. A week where, as a grieving pet parent, I knew that I needed to take the time that I needed to mourn his passing. To actively mourn his passing.
Today, the reality sets in - the stark cold reality that Mike The Dog is gone.
My Big Goofy Golden Angel
|
Last night, I sat in a chair of honor. One in which my Golden Retriever chose me to hold him as he breathed his last breaths of life. Surreal as it was, to watch this beautiful creature slip into peace - it was an honor to be the one to hold him.
Make sure you understand the details of how your pet is being handled after death.
Dignity and respect - it's what they deserve.
|
As a pet parent, I did everything for my pets in life - therefore, when they die, I want to make sure that they are treated with the same dignity and respect. When Mico died, we made sure to understand how they were going to treat her body at the vet clinic. "We will put her body in a bag and in a freezer - to wait on the crematory route truck to pick her up" was an unacceptable way for her to be treated. Make sure you ask the right questions.
